The ultimate car-camping packing list

Everything you need for the perfect outdoor adventure

camping suppliesIs uncertainty about what to pack keeping you from escaping the city for a camping getaway? John Caldwell (Forest Technology ’94, above) can help.

The Forest Technology instructor is an old pro – and he has a camping list to prove it. Caldwell created it when he was seconded from his former job as an Alberta Forestry timber auditor to the role of camp manager during the 2011 Slave Lake fire.

He spent 21 days running a temporary home for more than 100 firefighters. Planning was key to ensuring everyone stayed healthy and able to work.

While the stakes aren’t so high when heading out with his 2 teenage sons, Caldwell still wants happy campers.

“I knew I could be seconded again so I started to prepare a list and translated it into a personal camping list,” says Caldwell. “If you do some planning, you can avoid a lot of work.”

Today, he keeps a kit packed in advance so that when he's ready to head out, he only has to pack clothes and food. It can be that easy for you, too. Just have the items below ready to go, replenishing your kit when you return home.
